St. Stephen United Methodist Church has a rich and interesting heritage. In 1815, settlers began coming to the village of Woods Fort, which is now the town of Troy. Some settlers were Methodists who joined others to hold religious services in their homes. When the Lincoln County Courthouse was built in 1830, religious services were held there until the different denominations formed their own congregations and built churches.

Our first church, Monroe Chapel, built in 1859, was named for Rev. Monroe. It was of brick construction with kerosene lamps for light, 2 stoves for heat and a 4 foot high partition through the center of the building to divide the men and boys from the women and girls. With the leadership of devout Christians, the congregation grew and in 1900 a larger church was built on the same site as the Monroe Chapel. The building and furnishings cost $8,000. As lives were touched and spiritual needs were met, improvements were made through the years.

In 2000, a Window to the Future campaign was successfully launched and acreage on Highway 47 was purchased for future expansion. On March 5, 2006, the new building was opened on that acreage and our first worship services were held that day! We hope you will be excited about the fellowship and worship experiences provided by St. Stephen and help us grow in our outreach to the community!
